After defeat in the Aussie Open yesterday tennis ace Andy Murray let the flood gates open as he thanked fans for supporting him throughout the tournament. He’s not the first sports star to suffer wobbly lower-lip syndrome though, just take a look at this lot.

1. Gazza
King of the tears Gazza is famous for blubbing during the 1990 World Cup semi-final. In fact, all teary-eyed sporting clips are compared to this, but in 20 years it’s never been bettered.

2. Michael Vaughan
As resignations go, the former England cricket captain’s was pretty textbook stuff - I’d like to thank blah, blah, blah, it’s been a difficult decision to make, etc… But then Vaughan broke down, the cameras did their stuff and he made the front and back pages.

3. Paula Radcliffe
Great Britain’s great hope at the Athens Olympic Games failed to deliver in spectacular fashion as she broke down mid marathon. The tears, the wailing and the sunken faces in the crowd made for great television.

4. Alex Higgins
The talented but bonkers snooker player was a very emotional man away from the baize. During the 1983 World Snooker Championships the Irishman’s emotions spilled over into the arena when he defeated Ray Reardon in the final. As he clutched the trophy and his baby girl, the floodgates opened.

5. Kim Hughes
Aussie sportsmen are tough. Aussie cricketers are the toughest of the bunch. And Aussie cricket captains are bullet proof. Well, most of them. When Australian skipper Kim Hughes stepped down from his post after a drubbing from the West Indies in 1984 he was weeping and dribbling so much that he couldn’t finish reading his statement. Hughes had hoped to continue playing for Australia but the men in charge didn’t want a blubberer among their ranks and swiftly axed him.

6. John Terry
When the Chelsea captain stepped up to take his penalty during last season’s Champions League Final most people thought he would hammer the ball home. Rather, he slipped on the turf, put the ball wide then proceeded to cry his eyes out when Man United claimed victory. Laugh, we nearly cried.

7. Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo probably shed a tear or two last summer when Fergie refused to sell him to Real Madrid in 2008 but no-one was there to capture it on film. Thankfully we found this clip of the ‘winker’ getting all emotional in a Portugal shirt.

8. Marion Jones
The disgraced American athlete broke down outside a New York Court in 2007 after fessing up to making false statements to federal agents. This came after Jones admitted that she'd taken steroids before the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Naughty girl.

9. Pieter de Villiers
French international rugby player Pieter de Villiers wept openly after testing positive for recreational drugs back in 2003. There’s something very weird about watching an 18-stone forward crying his eyes out.

10. Everyone's at it
And finally, here a compilation of footballers blubbing. Warning, this clip made us very emotional.
