Ken Doherty ends Jimmy White's World Championship bid

Jimmy White
Jimmy White has not qualifed for The Crucible for four years

Jimmy White's chances of reaching the World Snooker Championship are over for another year after a 10-3 defeat by Ken Doherty in the tournament's qualifiers.

The 1997 world champion took a 6-3 lead into the evening session and blitzed home with four unanswered frames.

Six-time finalist White had shown glimpses of his best with a 103 break in the early session but the Irishman was by far the more consistent player.

Doherty now faces Joe Swail on Monday for a place at the Crucible.

White had completed a 10-8 victory over Glasgow postman Mark Boyle after midnight on Wednesday and began his match against Doherty at 1000 GMT on Thursday morning.

The defeat ended White's hopes of a first return to The Crucible, Sheffield, since losing to David Gray in the first round four years ago.

Doherty is the only non-British player other than Cliff Thorburn to win the World Championship.

The 40-year-old lost in last year's qualifiers to end a 15-year run at The Crucible.

The World Championship takes place between 17 April and 3 May.
