Ronnie O'Sullivan completed a 10-3 win over qualifier Craig Steadman to secure a place in round two of the World Championship in Sheffield.

The five-time champion resumed with a 7-2 lead and won three of the four frames in Wednesday's morning session.

He faces Wales' Matthew Stevens - who beat Mark Williams 10-2 - on Saturday.

O'Sullivan has also escaped a fine for playing in socks when his shoes caused him discomfort midway through his opening session with Steadman.

The 39-year-old gave the shoes to young fan Aaron Crosby and, shortly afterwards, borrowed a pair from tournament director Mike Ganley.

That swift resolution led officials to consider a penalty unnecessary.

"I've got no fashion sense at all," said O'Sullivan. "I had the last ones for 10 years and just didn't want to get rid of them.

"But I lost them and had to buy a new pair but they were bashing my feet. I had to take them off, I couldn't wear them.

"I didn't want to play in my socks but I didn't want to play in those shoes either, so I was just happy for anyone to give me any footwear that felt comfortable.

"I got a pair of Mike Ganley's stinky old shoes but, you know what, they felt great."

Another world title for O'Sullivan would move him level with Steve Davis and Ray Reardon on six wins, just one behind Stephen Hendry.

"For me it's just about trying to build some momentum," said the Englishman, who made one century break in the match.

"If I've got a chance of winning this tournament then that's what I'll need to do."
