Jimmy White fell at the first hurdle in qualifying for the World Championship as he lost 10-9 to China's Liu Chuang. The Londoner, 48, six-times a losing finalist at the Crucible, was just edged out by Liu, 21, at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. He fought back from 5-4 down to lead at 8-6. Liu won the next three frames but veteran White then took the match to a deciding frame. However, breaks of 30 and 43 sealed victory for the Chinese player. Liu went on to beat Tom Ford in the third round of qualifying, setting up a contest with Ryan Day for a place in the televised stages. Also through to the final round of the qualifiers is Scotland's Jamie Burnett who saw off Thailand's former world number three James Wattana 10-8. Former Crucible quarter-finalist Michael Holt of Nottingham stayed on course to reach the tournament proper with a 10-8 win over another Scot, James McBain.
