Snooker stars Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett were questioned by police yesterday over alleged irregular betting patterns during their match at last year's UK Championship.

The two Scots were released without charge after being held by Strathclyde Police.

The investigation centres around their first-round clash in Telford on December 15 last year - a match that was looked into by World Snooker and the Gambling Commission.

Before the match bookmakers contacted World Snooker to report heavy gambling on a 9-3 win for Maguire. And when Burnett missed an easy black that would have left him trailing 8-4, Maguire completed a 9-3 victory.

Both men strenuously denied any wrongdoing.

In a statement issued by his management company, 110sport Group, Maguire said: "I wish this was over and done with and that I didn't have these allegations hanging over me so I could concentrate entirely on playing snooker. "All I want to do now is forget today and concentrate on preparing for playing in China next week."

Meanwhile, World Snooker have announced that Peter Ebdon and Liang Wenbo have no case to answer following allegations of involvement in irregular betting matters, based on their match at last year's Northern Ireland Trophy.
